I know that this topic has to some degree been previously discussed and I have searched (and read) previous responses. Please allow me aks this question anyway as it might (?) have a slightly different angle.

Hi! I have not to much time to decide if I'm going to buy this unit. What I'm look for is cheap mixer to start out on - I was going to get a Behringer (bad SP), but then I saw anad for this MR1642 for $120 Canadian. It looks old but high quality, but I'm really not sure at all. Old may just mean sh*tty! (or vintage :) ) It has 16 tracks, four buses, VU meters, lots of sends.  I could find.

What options are available which would provide L1/L2 type processing at a low cost as a plug in?

I just want to try some stuff out to see if this type of effect is for me.

my friends and I are building a mobile recording studio and we are just starting out.We purchased a Alien Ware laptop with 2.6 P4 and orderd the layla laptop.we are new with this business and we would appreciate some advice on our setup.Since we have been unable to find the best setup information we are asking for help and pointer.For recording hard core music preferably.

Ok...I have been recording for a few months with a Tascam 788, a few pre's and compressors, and then exporting 24-bit .wav files from the 788 to the computer for editing.

OK, I have near field monitors and head phones as my tools for mixing. For the most part I can get everything to sit well in the mix until I cut to CD and play my work on other systems.

The problems is I do not know how the bass levels will turn up on other systems. Is there a rule of thumb that might help at setting bass levels using near field monitors.

Any thoughts on this machine? They are reasonable, price wise on Ebay (for me anyway) and was wondering if anybody has had any experience they could share with me. I noted that this one is 20-bit and not the old 16 and wonder if the difference is audible.
