Anybody using this combination as a channel strip? What are you tracking with it and how do you like it? What style of music too?

I hear(read) all this great stuff about 24+ track counts and many plugins and stuff, and I say to myself, that's what I want.
But I haven't been able to get it.
I have loaded the trial demo of Sonar onto my computer (300mhz AMD, 256k ram) and I can only play back eight tracks at a time. and trying to record a ninth track is an impossibility.

I have a DA-88 with transport locked up S err 11.

Took out the transport for a look, and its obvious a couple of the plastic (gears/cams) are bad (teeth worn etc).

Question. .can Tascam repair centers replace just the cams or do they have to replace the entire transport at $1400 less rebate?

Will you recommend a repair center in Mid-West?

I am a newbie and have decided to take the plunge with using the computer as my main cog in the wheel of music production.

I am looking into purchasing a PC based system.

I've been working for a year now with NS-10s on one room and krk k-rok on another. The NS-10s have a small sub to help the bass. Althogh I like the krk's I keep coming back to the 10's and I'm always shocked at the difference - in comparison the 10's sound muffled but somehow they highlight problems that the krk's don't (levels, reverb lengths and low-mid junk).

I have a DA-88 with a broken transport.
My question...

Can I use a PCI-822 TDIF,and my computer HD to capture my tracks instead of the tape?. What software would I need.

I just want to use the DA/AD converters in the DA-88 and capture up to 8 tracks at a time to HD

I see a lot of posts from folks who hate the stock Pro Tools converters. I've seen Pro Tools used in our C room for years without anyone bringing in any converters or anything. Most just go from SSL through some vintage comps or 2" right into Pro Tools w/ (3) 888/24. They keep it on PT and mix w/ direct outs to the SSL to 1/2". Sounds great.

How much can I accomplish or how far can I really go, production wise, in home recording strictly on a pc?

Anybody know of any good magazines out there for beginners to the home studio thing?
