Distortion on a Boss 1180 CD

My 1180 has many different distortions. I just can't seem to get the sound that I want. I want a "bass-y, punchy" sound. This type of distortion is available but only at lower volumes.
When ever I edit a patch and increase the volume, I get a lot of static. Especially the palm-muted stuff. I've even tried writing my own patches but get the same results.

Zoom H2 recorder question on how to voice activate recording

I just bought the H2 and i can not figure out how to voice activate via auto record. I am using my H2 to record college lectures and i need it to start recording when my professors start talking and stop recording when they stop talking, and then start recording automatically when they resume speaking, without having to continually hit the record button.

Recording classical string quartet

Greetings,

I just found this forum and see a wealth of experience here. I will be doing some recording with a string quartet and plan to post here to get feedback. I have an Avenson Audio STO-2 omni pair. My first tries will be with a home brew Jecklin disk. I plan to work with the SQ trying out venues and mic. arrangements. Any pointers and encouragement are welcome.

Thanks.

High Freq. Sound when keyboard plugged into Mbox 2

I am running an Mbox 2 into an iMac G4, and whenever I plug my keyboard directly into the DI input on the back, it makes a high pitch noise that is very annoying and impossible to get rid of with EQ without slaughtering the sound! Somebody please help! Oh yeah, I'm using a 1/4" unbalanced instrument cable...

Jazz quintet excerpt

Greetings,

I've been recording musicians in my neighborhood. Here is a song excerpt. The group is a quintet led by sax player Carlos Crull. Carlos is the best known jazz musician gigging in my hometown of Pueblo, CO. This group plays a weekly gig at my neighborhood bar. They set up in a corner, I stick an ORTF mic pair in front of them and hit record.
