Vocals to sound more pro-like
Now, I recently got me a lil home studio (AT3035, MMP-2, EMU1212) for rap music, and I'm wondering what to do to make the vocals sound more professional. Does anyone have suggestions or can give me some tips?

mixing vocals
I've noticed that a lot of rap music (and I realize it's probably across the board), the vocals are commonly mixed such that they are very up front, with the kick and snare just punching through the vocals. the rest of the music is just behind the vocals - from a balance perspective.

compression while tracking vocals
I'm always a little unsure about applying compression while tracking vocals. I know different vocalist call for different approaches, so i'm looking for some general guidlines to get started. Generally i'm pretty conservative on the front end. I use an Avalon or universal audio running through an AMEK 9098 compressor.

I want to buy one nice pre mainly for electic guitar and male rock vocals. I'd like to keep it around $1500, but cheaper is always better (duh). I'm going to be recording alt/rock/prog directly to a DAW using a MOTU running at 96k and 24bit. A little color would be nice I think...

mixing a lead vocal
I'm new to the forum and I am really impressed with the knowledge, experience and professionalism of this bunch. I have a question on mixing a lead vocal. I'm recording a rock band and have a decent working mix in progress with all instrumentation complete. Now I have the vocals recorded and I am running into a problem getting them to sit right in the mix.

Editing Vocals
hi, me and my band made a song and recorded it all as one track onto a CD from a mixer. The vocals are too loud to hear a lot of the song and i wondered if its possible on the computer to edit how loud they are. Thanks - Joe
