Equipment for recording a jazz combo
Ok so I'm the leader of our 5 pc jazz combo. Trumpet, alto sax, Bass, Paino, and drums.
The trumpet is being recorded with a Shure beta 98 h/c, the sax with a beta 57a, the drums with a pair of CO2 Overheads, the bass is DI and the piano we do later with the CO2 mics upstairs with the grand piano.

Equipment To Buy
So i've been thinking about starting up a basement studio, and I would like to decide what to buy so if I see it on sale I can pick it up. I would love to hear the opinion's of some people here to let me know what they think I should buy. I don't want super professional quality stuff, but I would like equipment that will give good sounding stuff. Here's what I figure I need so far...

recording equipment
I direct a school orchestra, and want to make recordings for the kids of their concerts. Currently, I have a superscope CD recorder and want to upgrade my mics and get a mixer involved.
What could I get for under $1500 to make good recordings of my orchestra.
I figure that I will add in the future, but for now, just keep the mics on a stand out in front of the audience.

how to best wire up a small equipment rack?
i'm looking for advice on how to best wire up a small equipment rack case(8SP SKB to give you an idea of the size) of processors (Eventide, TC Electronics) via analog inputs/outputs.
i'm wary of the dubious benefits of spending mega-dollars on pre-made Monster and Mogami cables.

Equipment/books to get started
I'm an ex singer in a rock band. Got away because of the crazy life it brought but miss making music. I want to start recording at home as a hobby to start. My old band did some recording in a basement but was all done by one of the other members through a mixer and a computer. My gift is in vocals and I want to concentrate on making beautiful harmonies with some effects.

Ok, so i am new here, nice to meet you all.
I have come here like I'm sure many people do, to ask for help and advice.
I have made a business plan and have a company ready to make CD's and package them for me, ready for sale. I also have a business plan and the money for the initial start up of my record label business. Yep, thats right, a record label.
