Equipment To Buy

So i've been thinking about starting up a basement studio, and I would like to decide what to buy so if I see it on sale I can pick it up. I would love to hear the opinion's of some people here to let me know what they think I should buy. I don't want super professional quality stuff, but I would like equipment that will give good sounding stuff. Here's what I figure I need so far...

recording equipment

I direct a school orchestra, and want to make recordings for the kids of their concerts. Currently, I have a superscope CD recorder and want to upgrade my mics and get a mixer involved.

What could I get for under $1500 to make good recordings of my orchestra.

I figure that I will add in the future, but for now, just keep the mics on a stand out in front of the audience.

Equipment/books to get started

I'm an ex singer in a rock band. Got away because of the crazy life it brought but miss making music. I want to start recording at home as a hobby to start. My old band did some recording in a basement but was all done by one of the other members through a mixer and a computer. My gift is in vocals and I want to concentrate on making beautiful harmonies with some effects.

Advise please! - Equipment and laws?

Ok, so i am new here, nice to meet you all.

I have come here like I'm sure many people do, to ask for help and advice.

I have made a business plan and have a company ready to make CD's and package them for me, ready for sale. I also have a business plan and the money for the initial start up of my record label business. Yep, thats right, a record label.
