Line/Mic Level Cables
I need some consultation about certain applications of Line Level and above audio signal with regards to using the right cables. I have begun building my own cables from bulk cable and connectors. I am re-cabling my guitar rig and recording rig, so far the guitar rig is taken care of (for the most part) but I need some advice for the recording rig.

Entry-Level Hardware
Hi guys. First post here. While I have little real-world experience, the world of audio recording has always fascinated me. Well, the opportunity for me to test out my knowledge has come around. A friend's band (genre: ska punk) wants me to do their recording. I would like to know where to start in terms of entry-level hardware. I would like to be able to record the following:

Drums signal level too hot!
I am trying to obtain a signal level of -20dBFS to -12dBFS at the input channel on Cubase 5, using the Focusrite Octopre Dynamic MkII mic preamp . The problem that I am having is with the recording of the drum tracks. The signal level that I am getting at the input bus is -1dBFS to -3dBFS even though my gains are set at zero on the mic preamp.

When listening to "live" CD recordings, why is the audience applause volume level (after each song track) so much louder than the actual music?
Tracking at lower levels than +0?
Hi all – I’ve just found this forum, and I’m very excited to be a member! I’m not a newbie, but I’m not advanced at all either. My particular problem here is, I think, something I never really got a firm grasp on starting out, and I hope to finally clear it up once and for all.

Low level
Just a quick question here. I'm getting a really low level when recording vocals. I have an Mbox mini, and Shure SM58 mic. The gain is maxed out and I'm still getting low levels. I was just wondering if it's because I'm recording with a dynamic mic instead of a condensor,or if something else is wrong. Thanks.

Need advice buying entry-level microphone
I am planing on recording vocals of a male singing rap, r&b, and alternative rock. I also want to record acoustic guitar and maybe other sound effects from outside (maracas, rocks, tools, dings, etc..)
I want to buy specifically a condenser microphone.
I did some research, and here is the list of microphones that I want to narrow down to the mic I will buy:
