Playing a CD into a computer for mastering...

Hi everyone, my friend's band is releasing their first CD on a small indie label, and the mastering engineer has requested that they send a standard 16 bit 44.1 listening CD as the master source, which he will "play" into a computer via an analog front end. Is this a standard practice for some mastering engineers?

TC Electronic MD3 vrs. Waves Mastering Bundle

I heard great things about the System 6000. ($10,000)
But if all you want is to master a two track bus, the extra features of the 6000 including surround sound appears to be an over kill for my needs. I have not seen much more on it that would justify me wanting it on this time. Though the George Massenburg EQ is nice.

Mastering spoken word advice needed.

Forums

I mainly do spoken word recordings in my project studio. I have a good signal chain (R84 or NTK, UA6176 or STT-1, Apogee PSX-100, Lynx AES16, Sound Forge 7.0, Event PS8 monitors). I would appreciate any advice from those of you that master spoken word as to what steps you take and what common factors you consider most in mastering spoken word. Thank you.

Monitor recommendations for mastering spoken word anyone?

I mainly do spoken word recordings and have reached the point of needing to upgrade my monitors. Last week I visited Sounds True in Boulder to discuss a project I am recording for them. In their control room I was impressed by both the room acoustics and the Genelec monitors as I listened/watched as they recorded another artist.
