i am looking for a mic and preamp, that has the most clean, transparent and smooth sound. (smooth is what i'm looking for)

its for male vocals - pop / rock music.

i'm a little tired of tubes.

Out of the loop for the last few years. Rebuilding the studio for the next CD. I'd really appreciate your thoughts on which Mic Pre would go good with my AT4050 and 002R set up. Looking for something around $1000 for male and female vocals, acoustic guitars. 2 channel would be cool.

Ahh I hate asking this, it seems like the question of the day. I m usually extremely decisive in my gear purchases but I'm in a tuff spot. I'm really happy with the gear I have now but there is definitely room for improvement to get " the sound." Where I'm at right now I'll prob only be able to make 1 more large purchase for the time being.

Wondering if anyone has any tips on mic preamp's and direct boxes. specifically, if i can use a good mic preamp (tube perhaps) to function as a direct box as well, and vice versa.
