cakewalk input monitoring problem

I have a soundblaster audigy sound card and I'm using Cakewalk home studio 2002 to record guitars and stuff,well I'm trying to,problem is Home studio has the ability to monitor the live input,meaning i can hear an effect on my guitar while I'm actually recording,problem is i arm track for recording,choose an effect and as soon as i arm for recording this noise comes through the speakers when i

monitoring-how to tell what's "accurate"

I must say I love these Mackie 824's. When I bought them last summer, I also purchased 42" stands to place them on. A while later, after trying different positions and width apart (including the general 'equilateral triangle w/listener' rule), I came to the conclusion that they were standing too high in relation to my sitting position, I felt I could do better.

Monitoring with built in iMac speakers?

We can land a man on the Moon but is it possible to monitor my playback through the speakers on my iMac? I'm using a MOTU 828 with AudioDesk on an iMac 600. Guaranteed good karma will come your way if you help me out here.
Ideally I know I should get a pair of active monitors- just not prepared to lay down that much cash just yet.

I have a Pro Tools MixPlus+++++ system and currently use my Yamaha 02R for the mic preamp's and monitoring via Digi's ADAT bridge. I would like to loose the 02R because it takes up too much space and is not a great choice for mic preamps . I do not feel it worthwhile to spent a bundle on separate and expensive mic preamps and Line level to Light pipe A/Ds. . .
