outboard and soundcards (dumb) question
Hi there guys!
I must admit that I have asked the same question before, though I'm a real dummy and didn't explain myself well, so don't mind if I ask again:
how do I add outboard reverb and compression AFTER tracking?

Advantages of S/PDIF for outboards
I'm looking at reverb units, and many of the ones I'm thinking about have S/PDIF I/O's. Seems nice, as I could use those now unused sp/dif I/O's from my DAW, but I want to make sure I'm drawing the right conclusions.

getting the outboard hardware to work with the software
I have an old SPX900 fx; the thing is 16 bit and mono only. So far I've used it only on gigs, ie. my modest home studio relies only on s/w plugins for reverbs and other effects. So the dumb questions:
- say I record some vocals or a guitar part, I'd rather have it dry, so I can dial in the right kind and amount of reverb etc. How do I get the outboard effects inside the computer?
Outboard EQ's for Tracking?
Hello all,
I am looking for some advice on outboard eq's for mic matching and tracking. I was thinking more along the lines of filters and shelving as opposed to balls out sweep eq's etc... and no bigger than 2U.
No limitation on budget, I just want to know what is out there that I can get my hands on.

How to bypass mixer pres when using outboard mic preamp?
Hello all, this is my first post here. Please excuse my ignorance.
I am about to get my first outboard mic preamp (I think a PreSonus MP20 used at GC for $300). How do I run the signal into my mixer without going through the board pres? My mixer has balanced line ins, but they are pre-preamp. It also has inserts.
Outboard gear or Plugins?
Should I Build my studio setup around rackmont gear, or are plugins of high enough sonic quality to do the job?

Sonar and Outboard effects
Say I had an older outboard effect that I really wanted to use with Sonar.
Is it possible to use a Sonar AUX send, assign it to a 1/4" out on my sound card, have it run through my outboard effect, then feed it back into on of my 1/4" ins?

Using outboards as inserts in DAW
Is there any way to get outboard hardware inserted into the audio chain? It would be *so* awesome to somehow insert an analog hardware compressor into the audio chain via my soundcard.
This sounds perfectly reasonable, but I never hear about this. Am I high?
Any info--anyone?
Thanks-
.nick
