everyone knows the old "better to overpower than underpower" saying when it comes to passive speakers.

but WHY?

when your amp is way overrated for speakers, you use the trim knob to keep from blowing speakers, right? (for example, if your amp pushes 1000w and your speakers handle 250, then you'd keep the amp's trim knob pretty low).

So I'm just a little curious if anyone knows of a device, like a DI or something that acts as a safe guard against Phantom Power? For use with Ribbons basically. I ask because its like a recurring nightmare of mine to just slip on the phantom power button, and then "boom".

I plan on purchasing a Shure SM7B for hip hop vocals, and I also plan on purchasing the Mbox 2 with Pro Tools to accompany it in recording. I've heard about problems with using the SM7 with an interface/pre that doesn't have enough gain to handle it, so I was just curious if the Mbox 2 will work well to get solid, clean recordings with the SM7.

I recently received an SM57 and an M-Audio Fast Track which connects to my laptop via USB (and is thus powered through this connection). The Fast Track has a headphone jack on it with which I can hear either the laptop audio output or what I'm recording live, depending on the mixer knob setting.

Is it suitable for mastering studio ?

When using a condensor mic, should I turn my preamp to the "Mic" setting and then turn on the +48v or:

Turn on the +48v then switch the preamp to the "Mic" setting.

Would doing it the wrong way damage a mic? Thanx all! -matty
