What's A Producers greatest tool?

A band I've been tracking for brought in their producer this week to get his input. We've tracked 12 songs so far, and I'm disturbed by his critque which was that the drums and bass gtr and acoustic gtr sound great, but the vox and elec gTRS should have been compressed hard to tape (actually Mackie HDR). I love the drums and bass sounds myself, and I'm pleased that he did too.

Ok i'm in a bit of a situation...I'm just finishing tracking with a band and got the call today from their manager that a couple big A&R guys are coming down tomorrow to hear the progress. Totally out of the blue, I mean I haven't even really knocked off rough mixes with some effects and compression going on.

I had a producer question. I am producing some artists that have a possibility in doing something. I am negotiating my producing fees. The artists are independent but may get a distribution deal or even a record deal.

I used to be blissfully unaware, I used to truncate, work in 16 bit sessions and worse, without a care in the world.
Then I discovered the DUC and I haven't been quite the same since.

Please forgive me for asking this question.

A band asked me to produce their record and they want me to go to the reaharsals once or twice a week, to tell them where they need to work more, to give them ideas for the songs and this kind of stuff...

Okay, so when labels have an artist who is self-produced, and owns their own studio...Do they budget any different? How do they approach that from a financial standpoint? Or more importantly, how does the artist/producer/studio owner approaches this financially?

For me, it was a path full of 'revolution' 'going on strike' threats, aggravation, upset many fallings out - annoyed studio owners / artist managers & occasionally (regrettably) pissed off bands.. ll in all, a 'fight for the right'.
