good mic to pair with a Shure SM57 for recording guitars?
Can anyone answer the above question, mainly when i record guitars at the moment i mic my cab with an SM57, record the dry signal through my BSS Audio active D.I. Box and also record the Balanced signal from the direct out on the back of my Marshall TSL100 then blend the Direct out signal with the SM57 signal.
fixing my SM57
Hi guys, I have a broken SM57, which basically was broken in the way that the signal from mic was very very weak. i.e. you could only hear it if i turned my mic up way loud and turned mic up on the preamp...
so I opened it up. the yellow and green wire is connected the mid part fine, so i thought must be something to do with the transducer part.

Self noise of a an SM57?
I am having difficulty finding a self noise value for the Shure SM57. Does anyone know what it is? Strangely, the Shure spec sheet makes no mention.

Shure SM57 vs. Heil PR20 on Heavy Guitars
Both are very good mics that anyone should be able to achieve good sound with. The SM57 is a classic and many classic and modern guitar tracks have been recorded with them. The Heil PR20 is a different sound and sounds more balanced to my ear. Fuller on the low end, easier on the brightness, but one drawback is that it seems a little busy in the mids. Little EQ to fix this, not a big deal.

If the Shure SM57 is #1, what's #2?
Of course the SM57 tops out as the most ubiquitous and appreciated mic -all things considered- but I am curious to know what is #2.

How to get a Pantera sm57 snare sound?
Greets all,
I usually record acoustic music, but will be recording a metal band this weekend. The band wants to use this recording as a sound reference. Pantera - Revolution Is My Name

Tape on SM57 on snare to reduce hi-hat bleed?
I came across this idea while attending a little workshop put on by some of the heavies here in town. One engineer (the youngest, but most talented) recommended this technique during one "class".
As I recall, he put the tape on opposite side of the 57 from the hihat, along the grill side. Anyone ever heard of this?
