Jazz recording new gear suggestions
Hi folks
I am a newcomer to live recording, but have experience of mixing and overdub recording. I will shortly have a budget of around £1800 Sterling (about $3300) to invest in some new equipment to help me record small jazz groups live and on location studio projects.
I currently own:

Help a green horn out! -- Software suggestions.
I am currently recording on a Fostex MR-8HD and transferring my (rather large) .wav files to my computer and ACID Music 3.0 (I know it's old!) for mixing, EQing, etc.
I need a new way to mark takes! Suggestions?
In on-site classical sessions, I like to:
1. start recording
2. voice slate the take.
Then the players play. At the end,
3. I stop tape and label the take (the file, that is) with the right take number.
Suggestions for recording trumpet and piano 4 audition tape?
Hi,
I'm putting together a recording for a recorded audition for an orchestra.
I will be recording mainly trumpet, but also with piano in parts.
The venue is quite live in acoustic , but not as bad as a toilet!
I will be using Logic Pro 6 with a MOTU 828.

Matthaus-Passion coming up, its a beast! Suggestions?
I am traveling with the Heidelberg Symphony and Chorale of the Holy Ghost Church (also Heidelberg) on a Cathedral tour, which I have the extreme pleasure of recording. All the venues are enormous cathedrals with soaking wet reverb.
Each night there will be two choirs and two orchestras.
soundcard suggestions...
I'm using cool edit pro 2.1 to record. I'm using a fostex fd-8 digital 8 track recorder as the mixer(i gave up trying to figure out how to use the fd-8 ). I'm playing into the fd-8 and getting decent sound. i want to upgrade my soundcard. there is a low low hiss on recordings. what do you suggest? id rather get an external soundcard if possible.

Mixing protocol suggestions?
I am mixing some of my recordings using pro tools. I was wondering if anyone had any standard rule of thumb. Is it best to pan everything first. then adjust volume. When adding effects such eq, compression, delay is there an order that works best? I am very new to mixing. I spend an hour mixing then bounce to my hard drive, burn it to a CD. It sounds terrible. I know there's an art to it.
