Description

The term "tracking" is a process when recording various instruments, voices etc used to create a song or production within its track. If a song is recorded one track at a time, we refer this to "tracking". Every time you record a new track, you hear all the other ones you've recorded as well. This tag discusses all sorts of topics on tracking music.

EQ while tracking

How many of you out there use EQ while tracking? And do you use outboard EQ's or plugins? I'm having trouble deciding if I should get two good preamps or one good preamp and a nice EQ. Right now when I record with my Vintech X73i's I usually use the EQ to cut out some boominess or boost the highs a tad.

multi tracking again (computer based recording)

I was just reading a post about a guy who was having trouble recording to instruments at the same time on different tracks. Generally i only record one instrument at a time but i would like to be able to record on two separate tracks simultaneously. I am running through a Mackie vlz 1202 (i also have a 1402 i can use) and then into a M-audio mobile pre.

Books on Recording (especialy the Tracking Stage)

hello anyone here can point me to good reference books on recording? (TRACKING) especially...i started reading bob katz book on mastering but its more mastering oriented! I'm really searching for something that would tell me a lot about Gain staging and basic tracking, avoid clipping, how hot my signals should be and stuff like that.

Compress while tracking?

When you're recording vocals do you ever compress the vocals while you're tracking? Because of contraints with my gear I do it, but I don't know if that's a proper way. I know you should run the comp through your Aux channels after the tracks are laid, but I think the compressor helps control the dynamics of a crazy singer, and fattens the track. What do you think? Before or after?
