Description

The term "tracking" is a process when recording various instruments, voices etc used to create a song or production within its track. If a song is recorded one track at a time, we refer this to "tracking". Every time you record a new track, you hear all the other ones you've recorded as well. This tag discusses all sorts of topics on tracking music.

Tracking-individual headphone mix

Wondering what the big studios and engineers use for musicians headphone mix when tracking a whole band?

Do they run for instance, 8 bus lines out of main mixer and then to an individual mixer for each musician? Or do all the musicians get the same mix/different level?

I have been considering buying 4 or so cheap mixers for this.

thanks

Multitracking a band on my laptop

I would like to record my band, live, in a multitrack format with my laptop using Sonar as my software. I've determined that I need some type of interface in-between my mixer and my USB port, the majority of which (USB interfaces) seem to only have 2 inputs. Is this maneuver even possible considering that the drums will take 6 tracks, 2 guitar tracks and a bass?

Double Tracking Vocals

Hi,

Has anyone had any experience with this?

When I try going it instead of giving a fuller sound it just kinda sounds like a chorus effect or like a really bad toilet sounding reverb, not like one full voice as on some tunes Ive heard that have double tracked their vocals.

Ive tried dropping the volume on the second track but it doesnt seem to quite to the trick.

Most / Least CPU efficient mutitracking software?

Help tracking down a routing problem in mixer?

I have a Phonic 2443A mixer that appears to have some sort of routing problem. Yeah I know, Phonic, hahaha...OK. I bought this cheap on purpose cause I just needed it in my personal home project studio for some things. If it is broke then i'll buy something else but out of curiosity I wanted to know how some of you pros would trace down an issue like this.

Using an iBook for tracking?

I have DP and I have a G5 tower that I use now. I'm considering purchasing a laptop for tracking on location. I would be using it along with a MOTU 896HD firewire interface which I already have. I was thinking of getting a second MOTU or maybe a Mackie Onyx 1640 with firewire option to do 16 tracks at 24/96. Has anybody been able to track at 24/96 with an iBook?
