One of the programs I use (Guitar Pro) relies on the basic Windows XP GM soundsets for MIDI. This program is not for recording, so the quality of the sound is not particularly important. However, the GM MIDI soundset is a pretty sad thing to listen to under ANY circumstances ;).

I have an old G4 400Mhz which I was planning to use for pro tools m-powered together with the m-audio projectstudio i/o and one of the PreSonus firewire interfaces. I figure the 400Mhz are way not enough, so I'd like to upgrade. In light of current apple's decision to move to x86 platform, and outrageous speed of the current x86 systems, I have these options:

- Kingston Dual Channel Kit 1GB(2x512MB) PC3200 DDR RAM

I own a Pentium 3.4Ghz Northwood CPU + Intel D875PBZ Mainboard + 4x 512 MB Ram.

As you know the socket 478 is dead, no further CPUs will be released for the socket.

Will an upgrade to an A64 system with (maybe) Athlon 4000+ CPU increase my DAW power/speed?

I can upgrade for $100.

I'd like to upgrade my interface/soundcard and am looking for your thoughts. Bear in mind that as I'll be continuing to use a laptop so it must connect via firewire or USB rather than slotting into the motherboard.
