Someone I know is selling a AKG D12e from the 60's/70's with the original box in great condition.

I don't know much about it since they aren't made anymore. Tell me everything and everything about them, what style they're for, reviews, critiques, ups/downs...everything and anything about this mic.

Mostly would it provide a professional sound recording suited for a heavy metal kick drum better than the D112 or Audix D6?

The D12E is not going to be 'great' for heavy metal kick drum, but it will be great for anything else...like heavy metal bass amp...heavily distorted detuned guitar, even that screaming guttural vocal that seems so popular now. This mic is one of the best ever made in its genre and few have been built since to replicate it, let alone replace it.

why wouldn't it be good for heavy metal kick?

Most metal drumming today sounds like a drum machine, it has no soul or presence. So, my thought was if i went to a more old school mic it would give a more natural sound. I'm thinking Zepplin IV or Van Halen's first CD mixed with the bass drum sound on Vulgar Display of Power by Pantera.

I love my D12 for kick drum. It has more of a classic thump to the sound compared to the hyped D112.

Personally I never get on that well with dedicated kick mics: I always seem to get better results with D12 / MD421 / M88 type mics than with the D112 (I quite like the Beta 52 though)
