so i've long wondered this but never really asked:
what exactly are some 'staple' items that would go in a rack?
what are all the items in this picture, for example [i recognize a few obvious ones like compressors, pres, and interfaces but what else]?

My budget rack.
from mixer-> compressor(used like a limiter with LONG release) -> EQ -> LSM (Loud Speaker Management) or regular active crossover -> amps and FOH.

What i would like to see in my effect rack.
T.C. D-ONe and a T.C. D-TWO. Reverb and delay machine.
cuple of DBX compressors and a few gates.

Monitorrack: amps, EQs.

Someone else can write a fat response :D

With all of the digital mixers out today, racks are shrinking in size.
Soon all that will be in a rack is a power conditioner...

But seriously - often a rack will contain the above: a few comps, a few gates, a few mic pre's, one or two delays and 'verbs, some form of playback (CD / Dat / HD), and a few I/O devices.

Oh, and a locking drawer - very important!

Yes. I seldome use compression live. But if the acustic properties are optimal i compress the vocal. and can even give the hole drumset a little group-compression. But thats on really rare occations.

The gates is maybe more important. They can save you alot of trouble. And you just need a reverb.

CD-player are for pause music and all those bands who have made their own intro and stuff.

The drawer is for... Snacks, headphones, beer, car keys, wallet, snacks.

Well...since no one really answered the original question....

here's what's in that rack:

Space 1 - Furman power strip
Space 2 - dbx 160x compressor
3 - dbx 160x compressor
4 - dbx 160xt compressor
5 - Drawmer (either noise gate or compressor, can't tell)
6 - Apogee BigBen master clock
7 - Presonus Digimax LT - 8 channel preamp/converter
8 - empty
9 - looks like a wireless mic station - I could be wrong
10 - Chandler (EMI) mic preamp (stereo)
11/12 - UA 610 - Preamp and Comp/Limiter
13/14 - Presonus ADL 600 tube preamp (stereo)
15/16 - Avid HD192 - ProTools 192 kHz interface

Cheers -

J.

i didn't quite catch the purpose of having a CD player though, if you could clarify HansAm

Not much to say. I can mention these scenarios.

1.Calibrating the FOH with a CD you know WELL!. So that you know when it sounds right or wrong.

2. Play pause music.

3. The band might have a intro on a CD.

4. Things might fail and you want to play music while you fix it!!! So people cant hear your cursing.
