I am looking for some suggestions before I "Buy & Build". I don't have a big budget for drum mics to start (about $1500). I have been thinking of a simple setup with just 3 mics; SM57 on the snare, a Sennheiser MD421 on the bass drum, and a RODE NT4 stereo for an overhead. Do these sound like good selections for the price? Any suggestions? Also my recording room is 20'x15'x8.5'h. I want to make a drum room that would also house some other percussion instruments. I am looking at making it somewhere around 12'x7 to 12'x8'. I have been reading a lot about parrallel walls affect on sound and in building this room I will be constructing to of the walls and the ceiling. Should I be making them non parrallel? I could make it so that there are no parrallel surfaces in there. Would this really help the sound and how far out of parrallel do you have to make them to gain any benefit. :confused: Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. God Bless!

You can get a decent set-up for $1500 street prices for a group of drum mics. But isn't the NT4 that stereo mic with the two capsules fixed at a 90 degree angle? If so, I wouldn't go that route.
Why? Beacuase it forces you to use only one of many possible ways of setting up your overheads (coincident pair). You couldn't do Recordermna's two drumstick method, for instance. Or any other stereo scheme, for that matter.
You are better off with two seperate small diaphragm condensers, and with $1500 to spend, you can budget about $800 for those alone, and still have enough to get a kick mic, snare mic, and even maybe even a couple of tom mics.
