Im currently looking for a good quiet pair of cans so i can expieriment with mic placement techniques(around drumsets and Amps).

My price range is preferably between 75-170. But if there is a jewel at 200 dollars ill splurge. I dont intend on spending over 200.

Some models I'm looking into are:AKG k 171,BeyerDynam DT 250, Sennheiser HD 280& 265,and Sony MDR-7506& V700DJ(i am not locked into these please give additional brands & models).

I want an equal balance of isolation and freq response. Please be brtually honest these selections have come from online. Thanks in advance to everyone who replies. this is my first post and hope it works out well.

I have found that Industrial Ear Protection
with
any of the headphone inserts as spare parts ... assembled into the protective units above gave the best results for this particular job.

even then it is hard to remove that screaming guitar from inside your head when you are in the same room
... it still gets in
so you are tempted to turn up the headphones ... short bursts only ... also you need a HP amp with grunt and headroom

I took up a suggestion to try using some of the isolation earmuffs (the type folks use on shooting ranges) that attenuate 31db with some earbud headphones worn inside of these. Works pretty well and seems to be about the best option. There are a couple of headphones out there that serve the same purpose. The only downside to these options is that you won't be getting the same quality of sound that you would with one of the nicer Beyer or Sennheiser headphones.

Those remote audios seem pretty sweet but its pushing my price range. And the ear plugs are a good idea but im goin for headphones. Thanks for the suggestion guys. If anyone wants to lend me the money thats cool as well. JK This website is awesome does anyone have any other preferred websites for engineering and recording?

I also bought the Remote Audio phones (see the aforementioned thread for my comments) - and I'm really loving them with all my heart (and all my ears :wink: ). Fantastic for Tracking Drums, plus GREAT for mic placement duties (priceless IMO).

I have read that the Vic Firth isolation phones are pretty good, too (people have said they sound better than the "extreme isolation" headphones sold elsewhere). GC usually has them if you want to check them out. I think they are below $100 IIRC...

I've never used them, but the Remote's look like the things the guys on the flight deck of the aircraft carriers wear! 40db of isolation is HEAVY DUTY!!! Actually, the 24db of the Vic Firth's are quite good, especially for the price(Most others seem to be in this range of reduction), but, if you've got the bucks:

sweet headphone monitors

being a drummer and engineer i also was in need of some headphones that actually isolate external sound. i was tired of tying my girlfriend's stockings around my 7506's so i bought the remote audio's hd-7500's and they rock!
let me say it again.
They ROCK!
280 bucks well spent. saves my ears when playing along to music as well as for tracking. hands down the best i've ever used in my young life!
