Since people really weren't up for talking about what they felt about their summing bus - lets talk about the whole damn desk - as the musical instrument that could be considered the most important thing in the room (although monitors are the only thing you actually hear, so they get #1 - along with the use of them acoustically), but anyways..

In what order do the following play in your choice of a desk for mixing. Think hard, this would be like choosing one guitar (acoustic or electric aka analog or digital), or one keyboard (real or a synth) - You can choose any analog desk with any form of automation - or you could choose a procontrol. My top 10 things are my top ten, feel free to amend them

listed in no particular order:

1) routing capabilities
2) sound of the summing
3) automation capabilites
4) eq
5) compression
6) past success with (confidence)
7) layout
8) comfort of use
9) quality of the talkbalk mic
10)faders

like I said - feel free to modify, curious what floats everyone's boats

Here are my priorities for a mixing console, based on what I can personaly deal with.

1. sound of the line amps/stereo bus
2. eq
3. number of aux sends/routing options
4. number of inputs
5. automation
6. sound of the 2-bus monitor bus
7. inboard dynamics
8. recall
9. creature comforts
10. number of hits mixed on it

Ahh but what some of you guys are missing is that the more features such as inboard dynamics 5000 subgroups and shit all hurt the sound of the
desk becuse those are more IC's and fets that the signal has to go through hence more niose less bottom etc.Do yourself a favor listen to the summing section of an api cranked up or an old neve. and listen to the newer desks and I will bet you that the older desks are much quieter. The api design was great because you could get dynamics and patch em in on the desk insted of it always running your sound through anothher stage you would have to compensate for and older Neves are great for that also . Thats my .02 cents. Mark
