hey guys, i'm looking around for some basic drum mics, i have overheads and i'm using an sm57 for snare, so i'm basically getting mics for bass and toms. i was wondering what experience anybody has had with Sennheiser E604's. i think i'd like to get three of those along with an AKG D112. I've heard good things about the Audix D series, and somebody even suggested going with the fusion series. this is going to be for a home studio, but i like to get as much quality as i can into my recordings, which is why i'm doubtful about the Audix fusion series, although they are much cheaper. The mic bodies are small and the rim clips make it easy to mic up your kit.As far as kick drum mics go, I would check out the ATM25 before I decided. The new Audix D-6 is supposed to kill. I havent heard it yet but my source is reliable.NOT the 'pro' 25..this is a different mic altogether and wont give you the bottom you would seek.
As Kurt said, you will also need some Small Diaphram condensers in the there too. There are many mics for this purpose and there is much discussion here and elsewhere on each ones benefits. On a tight budget you cant go wrong with ADK SC-1's. If you want to spend a bunch of cash and buy the best then AKG 451's or Neumann KM184's or the Schoepps.

thanks for the suggestions guys, right now for OH mics i'm using octava mk119's, i know they're large diaphram and you're not suppose to do that, but that's what i have for now, and i don't have any complaints about them. i guess i'll try and see if i can try out the mics and see which ones i like better, since both the D series and the E604's seem to be good mics, i guess it's just what kinda sound i'm looking for. thanks a lot guys!

I used a MD 421 to the other side (Where the drummer is) and I mixed it to the SM 52.
I love it..... but I got to say that I use this set up for Metal/Hardcore music.
For the OHs I use 2 Microtech Geffel. Great Mics!
And for the Toms the MD 421.
By the way I'm about to test the SM 69 fet from Neumann.

AKG and Shure have had a great run over the years but Audix is one company that has been able to turn the tides, so to speak in the national touring market. A really tough market to break into. The D series is a butt kicker if you can afford them but the Fusion is nothing to laugh at. We have slid many Fusion mics by the FOH or tech before just to hear them say "man those drum mics are really hot tonight", "did you guys change the placement?" we laugh and say believe it or not those are the fusions, the response is always "wow".
I know when talking with Cliff, Phil and Gene at Audix they have told me the story on the Fusion series. The reason the price is low is because they are built overseas. However, they are built under Audix guidelines and have the awesome Audix warranty. We did a comparision of these mics and the D series and as Audix told us they are so close you almost can't tell the difference. The Fusion 6 would give you 1- kick, 3- tom and 2 overhead in a nice carrying case. I feel you can't go wrong with them.
Also, we have been using the new D6 and it really is a great kick mic but has it defined uses. The D4 is still a great kick drum mic as well. Good Luck....
