just to wanted to make sure I've got the right idea...

I record on a power book using a MOTU 896. I'd really like to upgrade my converters, but as I'm on a laptop, need to run firewire. If I were to send my new A/D signal digitally to the Motu, then to my computer, I would bypass the Motu's A/D, correct?

Also, what would be a better connection, SPDIF or lightpipe? Thanks!

Yes you'd be bypassing the A/D on the MOTU. As to what's better, SPDIF is generally considered a 'prosumer' connection and lightpipe is 'professional', but in reality, they both transmit the same 1's and 0's. Lightpipe allows for longer connections, (SPDIF is 10 meters max, optical 15 meters). The optical on the 896 allows for 8 channels via ADAT protocol though, whereas SPDIF is 2 channel.
