That was the first song that sprang to my mind too.......great film, or 'There she goes, by the Lah's. Loved the track BTW, haven't got a clue what tape flutter is, but i doubt i could hear it even if you hit me over the head with it, with a baseball bat.

I can't think of anyone I would have come into contact with that would have had anything to do with that project... my song was never released, I did it for fun just to see if I could.
I don't remember even playing it for all that many people besides family or something. This is probably the first time it's appeared for anyone other than that.

I think it's a classic case of "those" types of songs all having the same vibe, and pure coincidence. And so many of those kinds of songs shared the same chord progs and styles (C major to C minor in same measure, Dom 7's for transitions, Major Third turnarounds, Major 7 on the end chord, etc...) in fact I think I ripped off the final song-ending double-flam drum riff from Ringo himself... LOL Plus, just adding a Rickie and a surf beat on drums lends itself to most all of those kinds of songs...

I loved "That Thing You Do", have seen it several times, dig the soundtrack, and while I certainly hear similarities, I don't recall ever being concerned with the possibility that my mother sent Tom Hanks a copy. LOL ;)

No, seriously, "flutter" is an anomaly with analog tape that can be caused for a number of reasons. It can be caused by the tape and the tape head being misaligned, or in my case, best guess after over 20 years of storage, probably a bit of tape stretching or curling.

There are several types of "flutter"... one form can make audio sound, well, for lack of a better term, "cracked"; sometimes it can be heard in an oscillation that has a kind of "pulse" to it, this presents itself more with instruments that play longer, sustained notes, like a piano chord playing a whole note, or trailing off with reverb, and you can hear a "fluttering" or a kind of quick "pulse" on those segments when effected by flutter.

The kind effecting my tape, and a common malady to old analog tape which has been stored in less than optimal conditions, ( and I wouldn't count my upstairs closet as anything close to "optimum") is what Kurt and I would refer to as "scrape flutter", which adds a "roughness" to the sound and is usually the result of a stretched, wrinkled or curled segment of tape. I can hear it several times throughout the song, I'm sure Kurt can too, being "Mr. Analog" (not digging at ya, buddy... just stating a fact thumb ).

i don't care about the noise because i like how the signal sounds. i'm a sucker for melodic rock and i love the jangly 12 string .... and the surfer beat? how can you not wanna wiggle something?

to be fair i listen to most stuff on my laptop. i don't get a lot of anything below 100 ... i would probably hear any scrape flutter if it was on a part of the song where there was a vocal. it sounds like gargling.

Yeah there's a quick section at :54, give or take... but maybe I just know where it is so I hear it more.

it sounds all big, and dynamic. and has smooth vocals. who wants that? i'd bet my 414 that it translates better to mp3, than many other songs. punchy low end on my laptop speakers. i like it dude.

it's funny to me how the gw interveiw w/ jerry cantrel and co, points, out "not a note" was tuned on vocals. like vari-speed wasn't used ever, and that vocalist are somehow expected to be out of tune now?

i dunno man, i guess i just like full sounds. i think you did well. wata been thinking about on the interface upgrade? leaning at all towards something?

Thanks K. Appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment. I had fun with that track... no pretense, no self importance, no deep lyrics, just a nice, simple pop song reminiscent of a time when 3 minutes was considered long. LOL

As far as pitch correction goes, personally I've never used it. I think it's a good tool to have in the box, but I also feel that if you need to start reaching for that kind of repair tactic on every other note or phrase, that it's probably indicative of deeper issues... like perhaps the need for vocal lessons. LOL
