I'm thinking of building an AMD 64 system and read to find a motherboard without onboard audio or video. Can anyone advise on a make/model of motherboard that I can look into?

Also, I'm using Cubase SX 2.0 and a Tascam FW-1884. should I go with Intel or AMD?

I would recommend a socket 939 motherboard and a socket 939 90nano Athlon 64 3000+ or 3200+.

those cpu's have 35% the core size of any other Athlon 64 and they run on lower voltages. that means they only output about 60w of heat while the 130nano type outputs 89w of heat.
those chips are also great overclockers! If you get some decent memory modules with them, you could easily overclock those cpu's to 2.5-2.6GHz in most cases, using only conventional air cooling.

Because of the high FSB you will get by overclockin those cpu's, you will be outperfoming A64 4000+ and FX55 (they both run at 2.6GHz, but with much lower FSB).

just my .02$

Since, nobody has answered your question. Abit AV8 (Socket 939). Rock solid and a ton of I/O. The nForce chipset boards a nice as well, but they are *very* picky about which memory you use...CAS rating, density, and chip manufacturer.

I have been running an Athlon64 .13 micron 3800+ for two months now and is just blistering fast, extremely low latency (due to the integrated memory controller), and no hangs.
