I have an HP laptop with an athlon 4, 256 mb RAM, 1GHz.

My question is: With this setup will I be able to record with 7 or 8 tracks at the same time on the firepod? Id rather not spend the extra cash if I cant use all the tracks anyways.

In my experience, RAM and CPU speed aren't the biggest limiting factors when it comes to numbers of simultaneous tracks. The things that I have found to be most critical are hard drive speed and the computer working environment. By the computer's working environment, I mean how many programs are running (including all of those maddening icons in the system tray at the bottom right if you are running Windows).

Laptops tend to have problems in both areas, since they typically use slower hard drives and have a large number of background programs running all of the time (battery meters, touchpad programs, etc.).

I would suggest making your computer as lean as possible and purchasing a Firepod through a dealer that will do a refund or exchange if you can't use all of the simultaneous tracks (30 day satisfaction guaranteed or something like that).

We have some very experienced audio system builders here. Hopefully they'll chime in.
