WOW! This is very cool peeps...I built a small celeron machine with some parts I had laying around and put a NIC and a 1394a card in there..put XP on it
got internet in...got myself a firewire hub, a 4 way KVM switcher(Belkin of course) and two 1394 cards for the other machines...hooked up firewire cables...did the domain workgroup settings..specified who gets what IP. voilla...complete internet and file sharing with a router! It's really fast too!
Only thing is that ALL machines must have XP on them...
Yeehaw! Well, I started this project at around 8:30 pm. it's now 5:45am. .time for some sleep than off to Mwave to buy more hard drives and processors! ha ha ha ha ha ha ha :D

yo opus: i knew about firewire networking a long time ago but heard it was very expensive so what i want to know is how much did you spend? i also read on cnet or zdnet that it is the fastest networking sceme or else atleast faster than the standard using rj45 cables. what do you think about that and also price?

Price isn't bad at all....I had two firewire cards already..I think I got them for about 20-30 a piece..same with the third one...the hub I got is Iogear and it's a 6 port firewire hub...got it for about 70 bucks...then I got a couple of firewire cables...those are expensive..about 10-15 bucks or so... can't wait for those prices to come down!
Then I had to buy a 4 port switcher, but that's not really necessary for everyone...
yes, it's friggen really fast...smooth..I love it!!! Glad I went that route to be honest and not the ethernet way...very simple to set up as well..again, you need XP on all machines to do it properly..

Well, if figures aren't lying (they usually do) a Firewire at 400 MbS should be about 4 times as fast as 100 base and 40 times as fast as 10 base network. Wireless is lucky to hit "11 base", and Gigabit ethernet would theoretically be 2.5 times as fast as the Firewire.

Congrats, Opus, you've just invented half-assed Gigabit... (flic, flic, flic, hehehehehe...)

Seriously, cool way to up the ante without springing for Gigabit stuff - Now, show us how to get beyond 15 foot Firewire cables without all the repeater crap and I'll be the first to kiss your (oops, point it out for me, will ya?)

Can't wait to see what this looks like with Firewire2 (the sequel)

Way to go bro, I see I'm not the only one that does some of his best work on sleep deprivation - some of those hallucinations are actually USEFUL... Steve

Well..the computers are only a foot or so away from each other so no need for repeaters...ha ha ha ha!
Main computer..which I call HAL(how original huh  ) is under the sink...feeds firewire to the hub(right above it) and sends from there two feet to the audio machine(ANUS!) and the third machine is another foot away from the ANUS machine..
Yes, I would love to try out 1394b...that would be very friggen fast!
Yes, sleep deprevation is a wonderful thing sometimes!!!
