Personally I think youv'e got yourself a little paranoid. Every peice of hardware is going to have bad reviews. You want to look at the over all status of what people say about it. if 8 out of 10 people say its good thats probably a great product. You've got to figure no product is perfect, theirs always gonna a few defective products. People suck so they're always more apt to review a product when they have a bad experience. You also have to keep in mind if a product seems to be extremely popular but has a couple horrible reviews because it "never works right" or whatever, those people are probably morons. I've seen tons of negative reviews for products that say I can't get my thing to do this and I think to myself. This product doesn't even perform that function. So you've got a guy whose trying to make a margarita in the glove compartment of his car telling you not to buy a peice of shit like this because his magaritas are crap. As a matter of fact while I was typing this I do tech support for ** internet company. I had a subscriber call in and tell me his stuff was broke that his internet wasn't working so he needed to come and fix it. I could see that his connection was working fine so I asked what was on the screen. He said this is a brand new 3000 dollar computer it works fine its a problem with the cable send someone out here blah blah blah. So what does it say on the screen. He said its not working on the screen it says there are other users logged into windows and that their data would be lost if he shut down. I said click ok. he then proceeded to turn the computer back on . Oh wow it works now. So he is a moron. Don't trust everything everybody says. As for the stuff you've been looking at most of it is quality product of those I think the mbox or the emu are prob he ones I would go with. Tascam would be a close 3rd. Hope that helps ease your fears
