I've never really recorded much on my own. Mostly all I have ever recorded were on 4 tracks or 8 tracks to a tape. Its been a long time since I have even played guitar (10 yrs actuallY).
Anyway I finally bought a guitar and amp. I figured out how to plug my line out on my amp (marshall mg30dfx) to my mic on my sound card (sblive! 5.1) and record it with Cool Edit Pro. I also have Guitar Tracks Pro and Cake Walk Home Studio 2002 but I couldnt figure out how to record my guitar with them yet.
Anyway, I goofed around and tried something simple. I played a few bars of the 12 bar blues and then cut the junk on the end and front off so it looped nice. I have NO idea what more to do to it at that point other than add effects, like flanger, chorus, reverb or delay. Not sure at all what the other 120000000000000 effects do or why Id need them.
But anyway, it came out ok, except for my slack playin, and it's pretty cool to practice scales over while trying to refamiliarize myself with the neck again.
However after doing that I of course had to try and goof off some more and see if I could record the lame little leads I was doing over the blues rythym.
BAM!
Problem... atleast for me at the moment. How do you play one track, like the rythym track i made, then listen to that track, while recording another track with lead guitar? Id like track 1 and 2 to be the rythym and then Id like track 3 to be the lead.
When I start playing the track in Cool Edit Pro, I can no longer click the record button. How do you accomplish this?
Any help would be greatly appreciated... and if anyone knows of any good sites a beginner like me can visit to learn more of how to my own recording, that'd be great too. This site is great but Im sure I'd get run outta town if I asked you ALL the questions I have now or may have in time lol

I'm not sure what version of CEP you use, I think mines 1.10 - so the following applies to that version.
First of all, you need to be in multitrack mode. You can import your previous tracks from the wave editor if if you didn't previously create a session. If that's the case, create a new session in multitrack mode, switch to the wave editor and open the previous tracks, then go back to multitrack and import them to the new session as tracks 1 and 2. Right click on the track and select "Insert" to import the wav file into the multitrack session.
Click on the red record button in those tracks (in multitrack view) to turn off recording on your pre-recorded tracks - the red "light" will go out on each track. I'm pretty sure the default is off, but just make sure they aren't record-enabled. I believe the tracks themselves had a red tint to them when they were record-enabled, as well as the red button on each individual track.
Setup the new track 3 for the proper audio interfaces, click the recording button for the new track - it should then be red, then click the main record button (on the transport field) when you're ready. The original tracks will play back through the monitor system (if you setup those tracks' audio interface properly, and the mute button isn't on), and the new track will be the only one being recorded.
If you have previous tracks in your project that you don't want to monitor when recording a new track, use the mute button on them.
When you're all done, save the session and wav files. You can add more tracks to the session, or edit the indivdual wav files, or mix them down later on.
