Who would have guessed: my budget, upgraded Emachines crapped out on me. There's nothing like needing new gear when you're in between jobs. How I longed for a Mac, but my wallet longed for a budget Dell tower at 15% off. :? So, I got this:

1 Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor E7400 (3MB L2 Cache,2.80GHz,1066 FSB)
1 3GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz - 4 DIMMs
1 Dell USB Keyboard and Dell Optical USB Mouse
1 No Monitor
1 Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
1 320GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
1 No Floppy Drive Included
1 Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Service Pack 1
1 Mouse included with Keyboard purchase
1 Integrated 10/100 Ethernet
1 No Modem Option
1 Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 9.0 Multi-Langauge
1 16X DVD+/-RW Drive
1 Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
1 No speakers (Speakers are required to hear audio from your system)

"1 No Monitor"

Do they charge you shipping for that?

Probably. It was $35 shipping. They probably charged me for the shipping of the speakers I didn't order, too.

I would loose vista, but thats just me resisting change again....

Actually, this one came with the CDs for Vista and XP. Guess which one I'll be using? 8)

I installed a second hard drive in my new computer (purchased last year) and installed Vista on one and XP on the other. I use XP for all my music and have it very streamlined and record to the other drive. It has worked well for me allowing the use of the internet security and program availibilty of Vista while freeing a lot of resources while doing recording and mixing.

Vista?

BTW, has anyone else noticed vista implements some sort of limiter (or gain controller anyway) on it's sound system?

You gotta love Vista. If I ever feel the deisre for my computer to run at about 1/4 of it's capabilities I might install Vista.

Preinstalled :( I'd format but the last time I tried the XP setup CD, it BSOD'd while loading the setup files.

Yeah, I love how after loading Cubase SX3, the memory is hitting at 50% although Cubase and Firestudio are running 8% max.
Then I start using MBCs... argh!!!
I've even made some strong efforts to purge my system of the unnecessary.

Just further affirmation that I need to ditch Vista, install XP, and have someone who knows better dedicate the machine to audio.
