Hey Opus...

I am about to venture into uncharted waters for myself and need some help. Please take it slow for me cause I don't know a whole lot about this stuff.

I am about to do a fresh install on my computer and go dual boot. My motherboard has newer drivers that I would like to install somewhere along the line. I would also like to update my Bios to whatever the last revision was.

I need to know exactly what steps to take so as not to fug it up. I have the matrox g450, two hardrives (one of which will be the system drive partitioned for the two O/S's...), and 1/2 gig of ram. A LAN card... and various other crap that I know to completely reinstall. I am assuming I will want to do this with the LAN card and the Matrox as well. I am using Windows 98 SE so I believe standard pc is where I want to be? Any other tricks and tips would be most appreciated...

thanks
Brock

Dual boot to what Operating systems other than 98?

If you want two 98 installs I belive you need to use boot magic to be able to do that. I've never tried a dual boot on one OS as I have never found a reason to, at least for me that is.

If using 98 and say Win2k or XP..install 98 first, then install Win2k or XP on the remaining partition.

Upgrade the bios first then install the OS' afterwards.

Other than that 98 has no special install modes..it installs..it runs!

hmm... sounds too easy...

Ok then. I'll give it a go.

I want two 98se's so I can keep one lean... maybe even pare it down with 98lite... the other I'm a gonna' use for all the other crap I have to do in my life. Office, etc...

Do I flash the bios before reformatting the drive? And I can't seem to find where the power tubes are!

also... I should start from scratch right? Meaning I should yank everything out? Is there anything that can stay in while installing the OS? LAN... Audio drive... CDROM...

What?!? You are already familiar with this one?!?

Ok... I do have another question.

Apparently I really don't need to flash my bios as nothing is listed in the fixes that I'm interested in. I think my existing bios will be just dandy.

Now there are these Via 4 in 1 drivers for the motherboard. These are a different story and I want to install those for sure. I'm thinking that I must do this after the fresh install and before installing any hardware. Is this indeed correct? Anything I should know?

oh hell... maybe I really should try that google thing again... It works pretty well!
