I know this isn't the XP hotline, but maybe Opus will grant me this one post if I promise it will be my only XP post?

1) When you have folder options set to single click, how do select a bunch of files? If, for instance, the files are audio files, the first one I click on opens Windows Media Player which is not what I want. Can you select multiple files with single click selected, or do you have to go back to double click to perform such operations?

2) When I want to explore my files, XP Pro for whatever reason seems to default to the embedded Startup Folder on Explorer's initial appearance. Any way to tell XP to just give me the folder overview without any preselected folder?

Good, I'm glad I can ask any PC questions and that electric shocks will not be transmitted to my keyboard!

#2) Let me rephrase. The question is not "how do I open Windows (not Internet) Explorer? The question is: "how do I keep Windows Explorer from defaulting to opening c:/documents and settings/ start menu/programs every time I open it? I just want the normal, historic view of the first hierarchy folders, not a view of two levels down I didn't request. Hopefully I asked that in a clearer fashion!

Like Bluetone said, if you open explorer by right clicking the start button and selecting "explore" it's going to open with the tree expanded to the ...start menuprograms folder. No other way that I know of gets you that view.

Someone around here may know a registry hack to get you the default view you want.

Another way is to go to StartAll ProgramsAccessoriesWindows Explorer.

Try that. It will get you to the first tier of folders with the exception that My Documents is expanded. If you click on My Computer from here, it will automatically collapse My Documents and expand My Computer. You should be able to quickly find what you're looking for now. As I said, this is a lot quicker than back-tracking from the Start Menu. Also, to speed things up, instead of clicking StartAll ProgramsAccessoriesWindows Explorer each time, I created a shortcut in my Quick Launch menu. 2 clicks and in looking at My Computer. Sure beats getting carpal tunnel everytime you want to browse your box. :D

I almost missed that. I just wanna remind you that backing up your registry "before" you make any changes is always a good idea. ;) I would also advise, if you're not completely comfortable delving into your registry, stay outta there. IMHO.

Make a shortcut to explorer.exe using the command line options shown here:

%SystemRoot%explorer.exe /n,/e,c:

The last item is the path to display initially. In this case it's the root of drive C: but it could be anything else.
