Heard an interesting recording of film music for strings composed by
Takemitsu, on the Telarc label, played by the l Fiamminghi orchestra
and conducted by Rudolf Werthen. The music itself is consistantly slow, eerie, and dark, with many silent pauses and a fairly constant volume level in terms of the dynamics. It was recorded in such a
way as to sound as if it is floating in the middle of nowhere, for lack of a better description, not particularly transparent, the strings sounding thick and coloured, with a huge amount of reverb, creating a dark veil and helping to bring out a vague distant quality. The recording approach is provocative in the sense that it could easily destroy a different genre of music, but creates a special acoustic environment for a particular context.
