Hi,
I'm looking to get a pair of monitors but can't decide between a few.
I'm on a fixed income/limited budget, so gonna have to be realistic about what I can get and probably have to buy used.
The one's I'm considering are:
- Tannoy Reveal 601a
- KRK Rokit RP6
- Mackie MR5s
- Mackie MR8s
- Alesis Monitor One MKII (recommended if listening at lower volumes)
- Yamaha HS50M (apparently very flat)
- Yamaha HS80M
I'm based in the UK.
I've a problem as I can't get into a store to listen because of disability (the nearest store is also 60 miles away!)
I don't know if any one stands out etc?
I don't know also if I should be going for 5" or 8" monitors...
The room size is 11ft 9" (L) x 9ft 6" (W) x 8ft (H)
...I'm reliant upon reviews and any opinions & experiences. Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

There is no best. Buy what you can afford and work with it. The Yamahas are probably the loudest of the bunch and they are reliable. I have a friend who owns a pair of HS50 and they sound just fine. All of these are designed as near field monitors so, don't espect to be filling the room with them necessarily. The HS80 are closer to mid field but let's not pigeon hole.
I have a pair of KRK RP5 and they are fine but I find that they are really lacking in the low end. Any adjustment below 100 Hz is virtually inaudible. I find that I am constantly guessing that the low end is fine. I always take my mixes to my car to check the low end. A poor measure, yes but it helps me to balance the mix. I find it easy enough to mix on these but I'm always cautious about the low end.
I would personally go with the HS80 if I could afford it. Just be prepaired to check your mixes on other systems(which is a good habit anyway). Trust your monitors more but be willing to take "advice" from other, more conventional speakers.
