the problem with recording guitars direct is that the sound often is squashed and one dimentional- I've used the vamp before for recording with mixed results- like ok but not quite there. Some people claim a good sound recording direct with a v-amp but I've never quite gotten there. I supposed it boils down to your own personal taste, if you like the results or not. By all means, experiment with plug ins after the fact. As far as recording guitar dry and add effects later... I don't know. There are supposedly many new good amp emulations out there but i have not tried them. personally, I rather get my tone by whatever means are necessary and then stick a 57 in front of the amp and record it that way-

I just found our about this new product called axetrak at namm 2005. I bought myself one directly after and IT IS INCREDIBLE. It sounds better than mny marshall halfstack and it is no louder than a whisper. It is an isolation cabinet about the size of a shoebox and its awesome i would suggest it for any serious guitar or bass player looking for a great sound for recording.
