Hello. Question. I currently have a MOTU 2408 going straight to my Alesis M1 actives. I have a DM-4800 as the front end to my DAW going digtally into the 2408 via 3 lightpipe cables. If I want to just fire up a keyboard and play it in my studio, I have to fire up everything, open a Cubase project, set a track to monitor, blah blah blah. A major pain and inspiration killer.
I use a Mackie 1202 vlz to submix all my synths before they go into the DM-4800. How bad do you think it would be to put the Mackie in between the 2408 and the Alesis M1s just so I could play my keys for practice without turning on the whole studio? I could always use sends from the Mackie to get synth signals into the recording chain. I'm just trying to simplify a bit so I can practice. Do you think that I am going to be changing the tone majorly by running all my mixes through the Mackie before it gets to the speakers?

I'd hook the monitors up to the DM-4800. There are control room functions for this purpose. The combination of Stereo Bus, 2 TK returns both analog and SPDIF, should handle any and all combinations. Use the DM as it's made to be used, as a recording console with multiple monitoring options.
I would think you could bring your keyboards into the DM without going through the Mackie.
