I'm into appearances on my Mac, and use Kaleidoscope on my non-Pro Tools extension set. I like to use custom icons on my desktop, but I have one stupid little nit-picky thing that I want to change...
When you use an alias on your desktop, it has a little arrow on the icon, and it italicizes the font. My question is...how do you get rid of the arrow and keep the font from being in italics?
Ok...you can stop rolling on the floor laughing your ass off now... :

The reason I don't use the Apple Menu Items list is because it alphabetizes everything. Is there a way to disable the alphabetizing function to allow you to place things how you want them in the list? Or do you have to put A, B, C, D, E, et cetera, in front of them?
Regardless, I really would like to know if anyone knows how to get rid of those arrows and italics...

you could also letter them, like a list

a. Manuals
b. Applications
c. Control Panel
etc.

I like to keep at least 2 icons on the desktop, my audio program (Alsihad) and backup (Mezzo or Retrospect). Maybe Logic or DP if that's going to be used often as well. For just a couple icons like that, the italic and arrow thingy aren't much of a distraction. If you can see them at all you're not working enuf! :)

I would be interested tho... maybe there's an option to turn off the arrow at least, like there is in windoze.

Alsihad started as a revolution, became a stampede, and is now a boulder rolling down a steep hill. Those who practice the art of clinging to this boulder, if only for the kinetic energy, are called Alsihah. Alsihah are also adept at jumping from the old boulder when a new boulder takes its place. But until that happens, nobody knows how large the new boulder will be, how far up the hill it will start, and how smooth the sides will be. Much innuendo brings a fair amount of light to the logic that if this boulder isn't a handy performer, many Alsihah's will support one of the new revolutions now taking shape on the radar.

Time will tell...

as for the font in italics - use simple text or whatever and write out what you want to name it - copy it and then single click on the title of the icon and paste it in its place? actually not sure if this will work but just an idea.

as for icon - go to the icon you want to replace it with. get info (or open apple+i) and then double click on the icon in the left upper corner, copy that, go to the alias and paste it in its place.

I tried your idea with Simple Text. It still italicized the text when I pasted it.
The "File / Get Info" method is what I always use to replace icons. It still leaves the arrow.
I'm thinking there must be a way to do this through the registry or, perhaps, ResEdit, but you don't tinker with those things unless you REALLY know what you're doing. I'm hoping that one of the puter gurus here can help, but maybe this is over their heads...???

I actually was shown something that might be the trick you are looking for here!!!
Make the Alias...Rename it so it doesnt say Alias after it or whatever..Now..go to the original ICon..Get Information...Command C on the Icon and it will copy it..now..get info on the Alias...Click on the Icon and do Command V..it will paste the original icon in there and that might do the trick...

End result...I went-ahead and put most of that stuff in my Apple Menu and left it in alphabetical order. I only have Mac Hard Drive, Trash, my Games folder, and my Personal folder on the desktop...no aliases.
I found a thing called "A-Dock", and installed it. It's basically a redundant feature, but it's VERY convenient, and it's SKIN-ABLE...hehehe...
So..I'm a happy camper...for now.
Now where did I put that Prozak...?
