Question:

Is there always a better way to do it? Or is it (after a certain threshold) only differrent? Sometimes we get lost in the minutae; this mic or that pre, tape or daw. Is it better to get 80% on everything? Or attempt 95%-100% on everything; and in the process achieve only 10%, on some one aspect that got over looked, because we didn't move on after we had achieved 80%. The Whole IS greater than the sum of the parts, or; do we still see the trees...despite the verdant forest of opinion, and knowledge.

I do believe there is a point at which the law of diminishing returns takes over.

As to were that point is ... is difficult to tell.

I always tried to get my guys ..(The band).. to work on the music at rehearsal so that at the live show they could cruise musically at 80 or 90% or even lower. This gave them more room to enjoy themselves and PERFORM better. When they had the combination where the music was good for me and the others guys in the crew (we did know when they played well) and they PERFORMED at 90% the audience went nuts. There is an 'OVER' perform level and this is bad.

On the technical front, I think there is a level of technical expertise that is required and from there on the music takes over. We should all have one or two classic peices to help find the yard stick.

However, when the technical is at 99% and the music is at 99% things are truely wonderful. This is where a Grammy should be.

Yep, totally - it seems that debate about issues like DAW mix bus resolution and whatnot is a load of crap - it isn't going to make a singer sing better, write a better song or a player get in the zone..a lot of times it's down to being ready, using appropriate tools and creating an environment where things happen. A lot of the best records ever made aren't technically perfect, and they got that extra 2% edge for reasons other than using the best mic pre that's for sure.. We all seem to concentrate on the minute detail when no-one gives a poo about anything other than is the finished article great music, is the band represented in the best way you all could achieve, & selfishly, are you proud to put your name on it ?

You said it! It is all about the music! Our job is to put average joe/blow amongst the musicians. Vibe baby...Vibe!
