I am looking at purchasing something along the lines of a used Yamaha AW4416 and would like some input as to what is out there that would be comparable. Are the other 16 track units in the same league, or does the AW4416 stand alone because of the automated mixdown capabilities, etc.
I have been out of the recording world for quite awhile and will be working on my own stuff as well as recording others. I had a Tascam 16 track 1" tape studio back in the 80's that I did a lot of midi sequencing using SMPTEtrack software on an Atari ST. So, you can see that this is indeed a bit of a different world for me although I have kept up somewhat with the digital advances.

The AW4417 is a great package to get..built in CD Burner..upgradeable hard drive..option for external SCSI drives..optional digital cards or FX cards..mixdown capabilities..basic mixer functionalities, automation..etc etc..
only has unbalanced inputs so there's one drawback..plus you can attach a serial mouse to it for faster controlling..
Otherwise it's a perfect project studio or on location recorder..of course editing is kind of a pain with the little window that you have but so is the Roland VS series units
There is the Roland 2048 I think it is which allows you to use an external monitor plus an external mouse as well...
Yamaha and Roland pretty much have that market down..Fostex has one but doesnt get as much recognition as the others do tho..
I think there needs to be a distinguishing name tho for those machines..either that or calling computer based systems something besides a DAW..
