I'm working with a PC Pentium IV 2,4 mhz, 1 gb ram, motherboard Intel d845pesv, 2 80 gb ide ata 1333 drives, midisport 4x4 usb midi interface, Echoaudio Gina 20 sound card running Windows XP Professional and i'm permanently having crashes, freezed screens, auto reboot, and so on. What do you advice me to do? What do you consider is the best Windows version for digital audio and midi work? My main software is Cakewalk Sonar 2.2 giga studio 2.5 and sound forge 6.0. I'm waiting anxiously for your answers.

First, are you or have you been trying to overclock in any way?

Second, if you turn the computer on and after it starts up leave it be...don't launch anything...does the computer restart itself?

If Yes to both then your CPU is going..replace it.

If No to both then you need to figure out where the conflicts are that is causing this. It may be an IRQ problem, it may be a configuration problem in your system.

XP is the way to go no doubt about that in the long run.

Try running without the Midi sport and see if you still get crashes...if so then you know there's the culprit.

Tell us exactly any configurations you have done on the OS or hardware.

To support Opus' statements and give it a slightly different spin :

Have you purchased decent quality memory? Does your BIOS allow you to "underclock" (did I just invent a new computer term ? Naaah, probably not ... :D ). If so, give it a go. If your memories are running at the edge taking the bus clock speed down maybe 5-10 MHz should significantly enhance stability. If that's the case you can decide whether to live with a slower machine or fork over the gold for better sticks.

Otherwise, just do as the man said - elimiate sources one by one ... won't take long.

In any case it's really not too likely that WinXP is at fault (can't believe I am saying that about a Microsoft OS :D ) ... then again, it took them 20 years to get it right ...
