Hi gang,
I have Pro Tools MixPlus, NHT A-20 studio monitors, Alesis QS-7 synth, Unity DS-1 soft sample. I am very interested in a 88-key that has the most "realistic action" at the right price point. with a few nice sounds throw in to boot...but I don't really need them. It seems like the P80 fits all the parameters except. MIDI.

I have read many poor reviews of the MIDI implementation on this keyboard. I want to:
1) Play the keyboard sounds directly into Pro Tools as waveform
OR
2) Access Unity DS-1 Samples and play into Pro Tools MIDI sequencer...with all MIDI velocity, volume etc information
ALSO
3) Does the lack of MIDI Thru on this keyboard hurt/limit me?. how?

So can this keyboard with minimal effort solve the MIDI dilemma...or should I look for something else?...any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Strad

Answers!

1. This is no problem. Just record the P80's audio out as you would any other line source.

2. Also not a problem. Anything that transmits notes through a MIDI out can do this.

3. No. I think this is only a detriment on "slave" keyboards. With a slave, you're more likely to continue the MIDI path "thru" the keyboard than with a master. I consider the P80 to be a "simple master".

So, what else do you need MIDI to do? Most sequencing programs act as a virtual patchbay. That is, they will "thru" the MIDI In to whatever is selected as MIDI out. What kind of MIDI interface are you using?

Nate,
Thanks for the responses....I gather that you are a strong supporter of the P80......right?

Answers to your questions:
I have the USB Midiman Midisport interface...The only keyboard I have is an Alesis QS7 with MIDI IN/OUT/THRU...I do not have any intentions of buying an additional keyboards beyond the Alesis and P80....also use OMS 2.3.8 to "patch" all outboard gear (keyboard and Roland SC-880 sound module)....I like to...ProTools sequencer handles letting me patch everything into MIDI channels and picking patches from units...

I would like to pick MIDI channels in ProTools and play patches from my Roland SC-880 or my Alesis QS7 synth using the P80 as the master....is that possible?

In reading P80 user reviews I got the feeling that picking MIDI channels and the particular P80 patch was a huge hassle! ...and that MIDI in genral on the P80 was extremely limited ....that scared me a bit !

What do you think????

Hi Strad

What you want to do is possible with the P80 or any other keyboard that has a MIDI out. As you surmised, ProTools will let you change MIDI channels to suit your needs so that the P80's MIDI implementation is not the issue.

If you're only using the P80 as a controller for a sequencing setup, its MIDI limitations shouldn't be an issue.
