ive got to learn some harmonies for a song but i cant really hear the male vocals. Now is there anyway i could remove the female voice so i could hear the male harmony. Could it be done with cutting the higher frequencies? (Is this a stupid question/theory)?

The fundamental for the female vocals is still only hundreds of hertz - you would be hacking off too much. I know of a tool (Adobe Audition) that would do what you want manually, but it would be a very painstaking, slow process. If they are panned significantly, Audition has a tool (Center Channel Extraction) that might cut it significantly.
