Anyone know a rule of thumb?

I am very new to recording and I have an MXL 990/991 microphone. I do not have a recording interface, so I was wondering if I used an XLR to USB cord, if either of these microphones would work by plugging directly into my computer. I have read a few forums and they said you need phantom power from an interface or else they would not work, so I am just trying to avoid spending $100 on one.

I finally broke down and bought an iLok this past weekend - actually my girlfriend bought it for me for Christmas LOL, along with Slate's VCC processor, which I've had my eye (ear) on for awhile now.

My first post here at recording.org. Nice to meet you!

I was given a broken vintage Neumann mic a while back and fixed it recently. It is an M14: a gooseneck mic complete with PS and impedance converter. The sound is heaven, and it's very quiet. I'm hoping anyone out there has some experience with this rare bird. I'll post some pics.

Researching this online has been an absolutely mind-numbing experience. Then I came across this site and am hoping for some no-nonsense advice on spec'ing a decent mid-level laptop to get my music ideas down and do some basic mixing. One guitar/vocal in and I'm guessing no more than 10 simultaneous tracks during mixing with some virtual instruments and MIDI.
