Widening the Stereo Image...
I recently did a rough mix of a song called "Propaganda".
It can be found at The Speed of Sound
I'm having difficulty getting the stereo field as large as I would like it. Is this an issue of mixing, or should I let the mastering house deal with it?
The singer will be coming in to lay down vocals tonight. I sang on this version, just as a reference for myself.

Lowest priced Master class eq?
Obviously beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but you have Avalon at around 3K and some others in that price range. Is that about the bottom line for a truely good eq that can be used for mastering. NO Digital please.

T-Racks 24
Hi? I'm new to mixing/mastering and I have some ?'s I use Nuendo to mix and I just got T-Racks 24 to handle the mastering side. What is the highest bit and sample rate that T-Racks can handle so I can record at that and dump my mix into it. Anyone know any good presets or settings for T-Racks to get a rap type of music sounding good?

You want to make their CD sound better
O.K. here's what happened. I got this CD from a local musician who asked me to give it a listen and see what I thought. uggg.. Five piece rock and roll and recorded to mono. Almost too much level, obviously normalized to 100%. No stereo spread and really thin sounding.

MASTERING DESK QUESTIONS
I have a custom built mastering desk with the normal stuff on it plus a few extra gadgets on it like separate sum and differance controls with inserts on those also so if a mix does not have enough vox or kick or center itself I can Sum those to mono also with the sides. But I still have a 1/4inch gold patchbay. And I want to switch over to a relay patching matrix.

Mastering with Waveburner
I just picked up Waveburner for the Mac and it looks very promising as a replacement for MLCD.
My problem is in finding a Firewire CD burner that is compatible with this software and my Mac. Emagic's website is not a big help as they only mention mechanism numbers and not the actual models.

which dither to use L2 or sonic solutions?
I recently purchased the L2 to use in conjunction with my finalizer plus and sonic solutions.
Before i got the L2 i would always dither 24 bit sources to 16 with sonic solutions, but the L2 says it's dither will make the 16 bit sound more like 19.

Average Loudness of Mixes
Hi! Can any of you mastering afficionados tell me what you like to see as far as average levels on mixes before mastering? I generally end up with my mixes (mostly rock/pop stuff)having a peak to average ratio of about -14 db. I get this mainly by using some compression on individual tracks, tho not enough to suck out the dynamics of the music. Thanks!

EQ tips
This question is for the more experienced mastering engineers:
With regard to boosting/cutting EQ while mastering a tune, do have a general rule you go by as to how much is accpetable versus labeling the tune as "in need of remix"? Obviously, if you need to boost or cut a freq. by 6db there is a problem. But do you try to stick within a certain range, say +/- 1 or 2db or what?
