what type of cables should be used with microphones ?

Greetings and salutations to all you recording enthusiasts. I'm gonna be purchasing an SE z5600a tube mic preamptty soon. Thing is i've acknowledged that fact that it does come with its own power supply which can provide 48v of phantom power. My question is will a seperate mic preamp(Grace Design 101) be necessary to juice up the mic?

I've got a pair of Royer R-121's on the way (to play with before I make the financial leap to a SF-1.) I've used Figure-8 (on a pair of Shure KSM44 LDC) in Blumlein, half a MS rig, and as a semi coincident pair.

I've got both choral and organ gigs this week where I can experiment a big (supplement the main rig.)

I'm trying to get a GREAT metal guitar sound with the equipment i've got. The problem i'm having is the sound i record is somewhat muddy and not "tight." I'm not sure if my problem is the guitar tone i have now(which sounds great in my basement where we're recording) or the mic placement.

Hey guys, I'm not at the point where I can be picky about which mics I'm using just yet, but I'm trying to get the bases covered. I want some decent stuff. I have a d112, and a sm57, I'm looking to buy the sytek 4 channel mic preamp and two decent overhead mics. Kind of get some decent rock drum sounds going.

Looking from the perspective of vocals first, then just about anything else, how would you compare these two microphones.

When purchasing used microphones, are there any tests one should perform to make sure the mic is in pefect shape? Specifically I'm thinking of getting a U87 and I want to make sure it's in good shape. Can we make a list of good tests to do when checking out used mics?

I've read what seems like 50 different ways of compressing the room mics. I'll start by saying I'm definitely going for a John Bonham(no, we don't have him for a drummer, but someone who plays similar) type sound.
