Hello all. Please excuse the long post.

Here's my situation. I currently do most of my recording DI (keys, bass, rhodes piano, synths) but have recently started to use mic preamps quite a bit more, as I'm now tracking drums (4 pres at a time). As I only currently have 1 mic preamp (2 channel UA 2108), I'm often stuck using the DIGI 002r's pres which kind of suck.

this is a studio vocal condenser mic. anybody ever used one?

i've been using an sm-57.

is this ganna be a significant improvement to the quality of vocal recording, or should i save my money?

What op-amp is considered today to be the best for building mixers, eq, etc. I have +-24V available.

I am recording 8 tracks live into Cubase SL2.0. Latest version, Mac Os 10.3.5, Edirol FA101 soundcard.

The problem is, that after a minute or so one of the tracks always randomly slips - i.e., misses a millisecond or two and then picks up recording with a lag behind the rest.

so i'm checking a lot of possibilities and i came upon this one...
is this what i think it is?

the Tascam dm24 digital mixer with a card IF-FW/DM.
with this setup can i connect the 24 inputs to my computer and record them? does this work as a interface like motu, etc?
or does this card makes the desk work as a control surface?

When recording heavy distorted guitars, going from a tube head driving a cabinet, Micing the cab, into a preamp, and then into DAW, what's the ideal place in the chain to apply compression?

With the Hyper Threading ON in the BIOS, i have problems on Cubase like:

some Tracks dont play
Computer freezes when I'm working on Cubase

i would like to know if there are more people with this errors.

I have really been looking around trying to find some "settings" not theory on what you would do in these instances.

My music is mainly acoustic based (think dave mathews with a little distorted electric, although i have a female vocalist)

I have up to $3,000 to spend for an all-around mic preamp. I was thinking the Avalon 2022 or the Langevin DVC.

Am I on the right track?

I record mainly acoustic instruments and rock music.
