Muddy recording/losing instruments in the mix

Hi guys,

First off, I'm new to this forum, and I'm also new to recording in general. I'm a far better songwriter and guitar player than recording engineer.

My setup is as follows:
- Windows 2000 with Cool Edit Pro 2.0
- Tascam US-122 USB audio interface
- Shure Beta58 and Sennheiser Evolution mics
- AKG K-101 headphones

Recovering HD24 files

I use my HD24 as a backup machine and only rarely need to pull data via FST connect. I also was using 200GB drive in it which meant that a lot of projects piled up-- too many, in fact.

I had recorded a concert which indeed had data that I needed, but due to that concert being in the midst of a very busy festival I forgot I had not pulled those files into my DAW.

to scoop or not to scoop

Should I be scooping mids out during my mix down on indidual tracks? Then when "trying" to master the final stereo track bringing them back up a little? I want that full range sound. I just remember when i had all my stereo componants listening to music many many years ago and to get that sound seems the EQ always looked like a cereal bowl or smile.
