midi controller or keyboard?

Since christmas is coming up i thought id ask for some kind of midi keyboard as a present. the budget i got is around 150$ or less, it doesn't have to be the best just good enough for me to get a feel. i want more of a synth action controller but don't know where to start.

here's what i'm looking at for controllers in my price:

Mackie 1402vlz Mixer

Hello, happy holidays! I have a question to see if anyone has experience with this mixer. I'm going DI 1-2 on my mbox from the mixer, so I can use the pre's on the mackie. I'm getting a hiss, low level but annoying. Is this normal or can I get around it somehow? The pre's on the mixer are much better than the mbox, that's why I want to use them. Is this a good idea or am I adding to much noise.

Your advice on the latest Laptop Hardrives for recording

HI,

So I decided to stick with this Toshiba M305D-S4830 for my budget recording rig to go with my 16 channel Mackie 1640 and use the firewire setup to record band gigs of around 8-12 channels at any one time. Hopefully it's not going to be a mistake to jump into the realm of Vista 64 bit, I plan on using Cubase but am not tied down by it (if anyone has a better idea I'm all ears).

why is impedance so important?

A buddy of mine let me borrow his Great River Mp2nv and I fell in love with the thing however there is one thing bothering me. When he's tracking a song from his motif xs to Pro Tools he always has the impedance switch in. He's tracking everything from kick, snare, guitars, bass, piano pretty much everthing is with the impedance switch on.

Is this a good thing?

Help with my setup?

Hello, happy holidays. I have a question about how should I set up a cue box for my home studio. We have a room setup as a booth and we need to get a cue system hooked up asap. What is the best way to go about it, I have a Mackie 12 ch mixer going DI 1-2 to my Mbox, so I can use the pre's on the Mackie. I need to get a cue mix to the artist 50 feet away.
