So I'm working on a setup, but I'm not interested in spending thousands on a single Neumann tube mic. To be more specific, I've been deciding between a Mackie Onyx 1640 analog mixer board, and the M-Audio Projectmix I/O hooked up to a Mac.

I hear all the time that if you don't charge enough, then people will not take you seriously. Does anyone find this to be true?

I'm using a Focusrite ISA428 with the ADC card to clock a Digi 002r via ADAT and the internal Focusrite clock.
I noticed the 428 also has Digi x256 super clock and regular word clock in.

Today I did a choir concert in the local community college auditorium. I used an ORTF setup with two RODE NT-2A microphones. I was back about 20 feet from the first row of the choir and up about 3 feet over heads of the singers in the back row. Pretty normal setup for us.

Being the bullheaded recording noob that I am, I only recently discovered Garageband's capability to record up to 9 tracks simultaneously. Since my school has a mixer, what would I need to take advantage of this?

As for gear, I only have a lightsnake cable.

I was planning on using my Alesis SR-16 drum machine through one of Apogee's 1/4" inputs but it does not work. I've tried all the various jacks and all I am getting is some faint distorted audio.
